EmPower Executives Helping to Advance NYS Solar Policy

For more than 15 years, EmPower Solar’s leadership has been involved with advancing solar policy in New York State. Today, we are more active than ever shaping policy from local jurisdictions to state law to utility interconnections. This year, three of EmPower Solar’s senior team members were elected to serve the solar industry through trade association boards and working groups.

David G. Schieren, CEO, was reelected to the New York Solar Energy Industry Association (NYSEIA) board and serves as its Vice President. NYSEIA’s mission is to advance solar energy in New York State, and to that end takes positions and advocates on all facets of policy and regulations impacting the industry. David works closely with NYSEIA’s star Executive Director Shyam Mehta, Board President Dan Hendrick of Clearway Energy, Treasurer Dan Montonte of Montonte Solar, Secretary Katherine Chelminski, and the rest of the board.

Gregory D. Sachs, COO, serves as the Industry Chair of the PSEG Long Island Interconnection Working Group, and also sits on the NYS Interconnection Technical Working Group. Greg has earned a reputation as an industry leader and technical expert, and acts as liaison between the utility and Long Island solar developers who are working to identify and solve complex problems facing our aging grid infrastructure. Solutions to these limitations are critical to deploying enough distributed energy to reach our clean energy goals and mandates.

Tara McDermott, Director of Customer Experience and Stakeholder Relations, was elected to be the chair of the Long Island Solar and Storage Alliance (formerly LISEIA.) As the first-ever female leader of the decades-old group, Tara focuses on local policy issues, including finding solutions to local utility and municipal hurdles that slow the growth of solar deployment in the region.

David, Greg, and Tara believe deeply in the importance of working with all NYSEIA members, including all industry participants from all market segments and geographies, in collaboration with the utilities and all stakeholders, to forge a path toward the success of grid modernization, solar codes, and rate modernization.
